Nadia and Carol

Nadia Comaneci is a Romanian gymnast (born 12 November 1961 at Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onestiin Gheorghe Gheorghiu dej, now Onesti Romania). She was the first to achieve a perfect 10 in an Olympic occasion. Bela Karrolyi, the Romanian gymnastics teacher who later became the coach for Comaneci and first became aware of Comaneci when she was just six years old. In 1969, she competed in the Romanian Junior Games where she placed 13th. In 1970, she won the title. In her very first international competition in 1972, she won the event with three gold medals. In 1975, she took home four golds and one silver medal in her debut senior international contest. Lyudmila Torishcheva was a five-time European Champion. In 1976 she became the first person in the world to use a backwards-double salto for a dismount off parallel bars. The path she took to success began when she joined her sister Nina Wayne to perform in Ice Capades, a traveling performance. The shows featured theatrical ice-skating performances.
